About Dr. Mira Shiva
Dr. Mira Shiva is a Public Health Physician. She did her post-graduation in Medicine from Christian Medical College, Ludhiana in 1978.
For over 3 decades she has been involved in issues of Primary Health Care, Right to Health, Women’s Health, right to health, food, essential medicines, food & nutrition security, banning of medicines, chemicals, medical technologies hazardous to health, especially for women and children. She has been deeply engaged with issues of Gender Justice and Social Justice.
She is the Director – Initiative for Health Equity and Society associated with Third World Network, Diverse Women for Diversity. She is the Founder Member and former Chairperson of Health Action International Asia Pacific (HAIAP), Founder member of Peoples Health Movement. She was Member, Central Ethics Committee on Human Research (CECHR), ICMR, GOI.
She was the National Focal Point for The National Profile - Women Health and Development and has edited the National Profile, Towards Comprehensive Women’s Health Policies and Program, women ecology and health Rational Drug Policy, Banned & Bannable Drugs. She has written extensively on these issues for policy advocacy, for training for health workers and for public awareness.
She is the first recipient of Dr. Olle Hannson award for sharing moral courage and her contribution in Rational Use of Medicine nationally and globally in 1986 and in 2005 on International Women’s Day Ministry of Science and Technology was awarded ‘Women Science Award’ for her contribution in prevention of misuse of medicines and medical technology.
